Auto insurance rates for young drivers are more expensive compared to the ones for people over 25. Since some young people drive recklessly and are more prone to accidents due to lack of driving experience, insuring them will cause higher car insurance rates.
Here are 5 ways to lower your young driver’s insurance rates:
- Parents can save on insurance cost by adding their young driver to their existing insurance policy rather than being insured separately. Existing rates will increase but it will be significantly cheaper than adding another policy. Try comparing rates of various insurance companies so you can get a better deal.
- Young drivers insurance rates can be lowered down if he/she performs well in school. Maintaining an average of “B” or higher can qualify a teenager to car insurance discounts. Some insurance companies can provide up to 25% discount to students who get good grades. For them, academically good students can be considered more responsible and then can be rewarded with lower premium rates.
- Insurance can also be provided at a lower rate if the teenager performs well in a driver’s education course. Some states require teenagers to attend such course before they can get a license. If the county or state that you are in does not require driver’s education, look for a class that you can attend. Local high school or community colleges may offer this course, or you can contact the motor vehicle department in your state and they may be able to provide the list of places where they can attend these classes.
- Most companies offer discounted insurance rates if a young person has a good driving record. As much as possible, avoid filing insurance claims for minor damages such as bent fenders and any other minor accidents. Consider not only the deductible amount but also the effect the claim will have on your future insurance payments before filing a claim. Always drive safely and follow driving rules so as to avoid traffic tickets – these will also result in an increased insurance premium. .
- Consider a higher deductible amount on your collision and theft insurance. This is a very reliable way to reduce your insurance premiums. The tradeoff is that you will pay more out of your pocket if a claim is made before the insurance company pays the rest.
There are a lot of ways to get a cheaper car insurance for young drivers. Just do not forget that being a responsible driver would give you the best deals in the future.
